It was the third time he had visited the town of San Andrés Cohamiata. It is a long journey to get there, ten hours by road plus two hours by dirt roads and stones. It definitely was not like the first time. The roads stopped being safe, drug trafficking has taken over many areas in the Jalisco sierra and danger is always present.

Holy Week is a very solemn celebration for the Wixarika people, despite the influence of Catholicism in their culture, its celebration takes place without the presence of any priest or Catholic authority, it is a mixture of Christian and pagan beliefs.

It was good to meet old friends I met from the first time I visited San Andres, good memories and good talks, possibly many years to come back, but I know I’ll be back.
