Read your manuals. People commonly do not read manuals that come with any appliance or object (specially if you are Mexican, we learn by trial and error). The same happens when you purchase a camera, you get everything out of the box and put the manual aside thinking that you know what’s in it. Reading the manual gives you the advantage to learn your camera’s functions and features. Sometimes, you can learn the upgrades and get to know your equipment completely which is a great step to get ahead in your photography.

Practice out of your comfort zone. When you practice your shots, do so in environments that make you uncomfortable. For example: at hours where you might have trouble with light, in narrow spaces, or without any lightning that you can control. By doing so, you get to know until what the limits of your equipment are and come out with creative solutions that you wouldn’t expect to accomplish. You will be prepared to encounter any situation whenever you are required to do so.

Keep a logbook. Although it’s been a while since I started out as a photographer, I still keep a diary of what might help in the future. I write down the lightning sets that I use, the weather conditions of the shoot, ideas or any specific thing I need to remember from my trips. Sometimes you don’t remember how lightning was set for a specific photograph that you might need to replicate, so, looking at your logbook helps. You can draw how flash was located, how the Sun was positioned, what aperture, speed or ISO you used and even write down the lens that was on your camera.

Tres pasos básicos para mejorar como fotógrafo

Lee todos tus instructivos. La mayoría de las personas (y más si eres mexicano) tienen la mala costumbre de no leer los instructivos que acompañan cualquier aparato u objeto que los acompañe, lo mismo pasa en la fotografía, cuando alguien adquiere una cámara o cualquier otro dispositivo fotográfico, lo primero que hacen es sacar todo lo que venga dentro de la caja y hacer a un lado el instructivo, dando por hecho que ya sabemos que dice en el. Para tu sorpresa, más que decirte de donde se prende o apaga tu cámara o dispositivo fotográfico, leer el instructivo te lleva a conocer a detalle cada una de las funciones, sus capacidades, muchas veces mejoras que el fabricante ha hecho en relación a modelos anteriores, leer el instructivo es conocer plenamente tu equipo, y eso el final del día es una gran ventaja.

Practica bajo condiciones no favorables. Cuando practiques aléjate de tu zona de confort, evita las condiciones de luz controladas, busca horarios poco o nada favorables para realizar tus tomas, espacios donde sientas que no puedes sacar mucho provecho, al hacer esto estarás conociendo hasta donde puedes llevar tu equipo fotográfico al límite, crearás soluciones creativas que no esperarías lograr, estarás preparado para afrontar cualquier situación que se te presente en tu trabajo profesional cuando se requiera.

Lleva una bitácora. A pesar que han pasado muchos años desde que comencé como fotógrafo, aún llevo conmigo un diario que me sirve de bitácora donde escribo cosas que podrán ayudarme en un futuro. En el escribo esquemas de luz que utilizo, condiciones en que hice la toma, ideas, apuntes de mis viajes. Muchas veces cuando vas comenzando logras hacer una buena fotografía y no sabes como lo hiciste, cuando quieres volver a replicar dicha toma ya no sabes que hacer o como lograrlo, justo para eso sirve tu bitácora, puedes hacer un dibujo de como acomodaste tu flash, o en que posición estaba el sol al momento en que hiciste la toma, que apertura, velocidad e iso usaste, que lente tenías montado en tu cámara, etc.
