2.- Believing that when you purchase the “best” camera, you are buying the best photographs. Practice and experimentation will make you the best, not your camera.
3.- Believing that you know everything. You don’t. You never know it all, there is always something new to learn.
4.- Discrediting the work of others. Having a better photography equipment, more years of experience or developing more abilities does not give you the right to discredit the work of others. Be respectful, even more when you are not asked for an opinion.
5.- It is a mistake to think that your old camera and lens will make you fit for a competitive world. It is a mistake to think that yo have to buy the best too. It is one thing to take advantage of what you can actually afford and another to keep mediocre. If you want to grow, you need to invest.
6.- Believing that Facebook will bring you thousands of potential clients. Social media is a way for you to keep others informed, to keep yourself updated. Your clients will become part of your social media once you have worked with them. Yet, it might happen that every once in a while, you will be contacted through them. The best way to get clients is to knock on doors.
7.- Shooting once in a while. Your camera must be with you ALWAYS.
8.- Not updating your portfolio. It is a common mistake that once you have a portfolio, you don’t update it. Your portfolio is the best way to show your latest and best work to the world. By doing this, you will be updated.
9.- Be a Do-It-All. Specialize. Look for what makes you feel whole. Do not turn your passion into an ordinary job that will allow you to get the minimum wage.
10.- Being a poser. Be yourself. Common preconceived ideas of what a photographer looks like: Cap on backwards, the beige vest with pockets, hipster, rockstar, vintage camera; among others. If this is not you, do not make yourself someone you are not. I strongly believe that if you turn into someone that is preconceived you will show preconceived photographs. Be yourself and when you do; you will be able to show what is really inside you.
10 consejos de que no hacer como fotógrafo.
1.- Auto nombrarte “Fotógrafo Profesional”, es tan ridículo el título como lo sería “Médico Profesional”, “Abogado Profesional”, “Arquitecto Profesional”, deja que tu trabaje hable por ti mismo y sea el quién te defina como “profesional”.
2.- Creer que comprando la mejor cámara estarás comprando las mejores fotografías. Falso. La práctica y la experimentación es lo que te hará tomar mejores fotografías, no una cámara.
3.- Creer que ya lo sabes todo. Nunca se sabe todo, siempre hay algo nuevo que aprender.
4.- Desacreditar el trabajo de los demás. El que tengas un mejor equipo o más desarrolladas ciertas capacidades o que tengas más años dedicándote a la fotografía no te da ningún derecho de desacreditar el trabajo de los demás, se respetuoso, y más si no te piden tu opinión.
5.- Al igual que creer que comprando la mejor cámara tomarás mejores fotografías es igual de erróneo pensar que con tu vieja cámara y tu lente viejo serás capaz de sobresalir en este mundo tan competitivo, una cosa es sacarle el mayor provecho a lo que tienes en este momento y otra muy distinta es quedarte en la mediocridad, si quieres crecer tienes que invertir.
6.- Pensar en que tu Facebook te va a traer a miles de clientes potenciales. Las redes sociales es para mantener informadas a las personas de lo que estamos haciendo actualmente, mantenernos vigentes, normalmente los clientes comienzan a adherirse a tus redes sociales después de que trabajaste con ellos, no es a través de alguna red social que te contraten (aunque muy rara vez puede llegar a suceder), la mejor manera de venderte es salir a tocar puertas.
7.- Tomar tu cámara solo de vez en cuando. Tu cámara tiene que estar pegada a ti SIEMPRE.
8.- No actualizar tu portafolio. Es un error común en los fotógrafos que una vez que arman su portafolio no lo vuelven a actualizar sino hasta muchos meses después. Tu portafolio es tu ventana al mundo, y por lo tanto es importante que muestres tus últimos trabajo, los mejores, eso te mantendrá vigente.
9.- Ser todólogo. Especialízate, es un canto de sirenas y mas si vas comenzando querer dispararle a lo que se mueva (foto social, de alimentos, comercial, editorial, etc), busca lo que más te llene y no termines convirtiendo una pasión en un oficio ordinario que te hará cobrar un par de pesos.
10.- Se tu mismo. La boina hacia atrás, el chaleco beige con bolsas al frente, el look hipster o rock star, la cámara retro, todo son ideas preconcebidas que no te llevarán a nada que no sea dar una “impresión”, se tu mismo, creo firmemente que si te conviertes en una persona pre fabricada harás fotografías pre fabricadas, se tu mismo y cuando lo hagas podrás mostrar a través de una cámara que es lo que realmente hay dentro de ti.
